| This workshop will provide you with the basics of starting your own little flock. Topics of discussion will include choosing which breed(s) are best for you, early care (the day old chicks arrive in the mail!!), space requirements, shelter considerations, feed requirements, nest boxes, dealing with predators, having a run vs. free range, winter care, and ultimately what to do with an aging flock. Handouts will be provided. Note: Chickens are true omnivores. They love greens (lettuce leaves, grass, etc.), insects and worms, as well as seeds and grains. The average store-bought egg lacks this natural balance. Your table scraps are a delicacy for them. By having your own hens, you get a fresher (by far!), better tasting, an arguably more nutritious egg at less cost. In addition you have had the enjoyment of observing your own little flock in action as well as the good feeling that your eggs come from happy, contented chickens versus the deplorable conditions most chickens live under. When in production, the average hen will produce 5 to 7 eggs per week. | |||
